Two former BNP and Jamaat lawmakers under ACC scanner

Update : 29 Jan 2014, 07:35 PM

The Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to initiate inquiry against former BNP lawmaker Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Jamaat lawmaker Mia Golam Parwar on charges of amassing “illegal” wealth.

A regular meeting of the commission approved the inquiry against Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee and Khulna city Jamaat-e-Islami chief Mia Golam Parwar following allegations against them, an official said.

The allegations were reviewed and scrutinised by the three-member team of ACC. The official added that the commission was now conducting an inquiry against at least 12 BNP leaders including two vice-chairman M Morshed Khan and Sadek Hossain Khoka, standing committee member Moudud Ahmed and former state minister of education ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon.

The commission on January 22 assigned seven of its officials to inquiry into the phenomenal rise of wealth and assets of two former ministers, a state minister and four lawmakers.

They are former health minister AFM Ruhal Haque, former state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan, former state minister for water resources Mahbubur Rahman, and lawmakers Abdur Rahman Badi of Cox’s Bazar 4 constituency,  Aslamul Haque of Dhaka 14,  Enamul Haque of Rajshahi 4 and Abdul Jabbar of Satkhira 2.

Officials said many other lawmakers were in the pipeline after being suspected of accumulating wealth illegally.

After the Election Commission published the wealth statements of those candidates last month ahead of the 10th parliamentary polls, media reports highlighted the large discrepancies between the information they had provided for the 9th general elections in 2008.

Following news reports on the huge increase in the fortunes of several prominent Awami League leaders and their family members over the past five years, the ACC started collecting newspaper clippings and analysing relevant documents.
