Two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were killed in a 'gunfight' with members of joint forces in Debhataupazila of Satkhira early on Sunday.
Two police personnel were also injured in the 'gunfight'.
The deceased were identified as Debhata upazila unit Shibir Secretary Abul Kalam, 22, son of Akbar Ali of Kulia village. He was a first year honours student of Satkhira Government College. Another victim was identified as Maruf Hossain alias Chutan, 24, a Shibir activist, son of Jamaat Leader Ashraful Islam.
Police recovered two pipe guns, five crude bombs and five rounds of ammunition from the spot.
Debhata OC Tareq Biswas said police, arrested Kalam and Maruf from their houses during a raid. Later, they confessed to police that they had illegal arms in their possession.
The joint forces members conducted drives with them to recover the arms on Saturday night. When they reached the Narikeli area of Sakhipur union of the upazila, Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire and hurled crude bomb sat them.
In retaliation, the joint forces personnel opened fire, triggering a gunfight between them, the OC said. Kalam and Muruf sustained bullet wounds during the conflict. After the gunfight, they were taken to Sakhipur Hospital of Debhata upazila. They were then shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital where the duty doctors declared them dead.
A total of 10 cases including attacks on policemen and killings were filed against Kalam while nine cases were filed against Maruf with Debhata police station.
Both were the accused of killing Debhata Upazila Awami League Organising Secretary Abu Raihan.
Relatives of the deceased claimed that police arrested them and took them to Debhata police station. Later, they were taken to the Narikeli area and were shot to death.
However, Debhata OC denied the claim, calling it false and baseless.
