A Jamaat leader has been killed in 'gunfight' with the joint forces at Naodapara village under Kotchandpur upazila in the district in the early hours of Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Finance Secretary of Kotchandpur upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Enamul Haque Biswas, 55.
Enamul was wanted in a number of cases, including attack on police members.
The law enforcers recovered a shutter gun and two fresh crude bombs from the possession of the deceased.
M Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge of Kotchandpur police station said the joint forces conducted a drive at Naodapara at about 2am after they received information that a gang of miscreants was staying there.
Sensing the joint forces drive, the miscreants hurled crude bombs and opened fire on the law enforcers, triggering the exchange of shots, said the OC.
He added: “Enamul sustained bullet injury in the 'gunfight'. He was rushed to Jhenaidah sadar hospital at about 4am where duty doctor declared him dead.”
The body was sent to Jhenaidah sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
A case was filed with local police in this connection.
Kotchandpur police station Sub-Inspectors Mukter Hossain and Mijanur Rahan and Constable Joydev Chowdhury also sustained injuries during the 'gunfight'.
They were provided primary treatment, police said.
Jamaat leaders have condemned the incident, saying it was a simple killing under the police custody.
Kotchandpur upazila Jamaat Amir Tajul Islam claimed that the plain-clothes policemen had arrested Enamul in the presence of hundreds of people from the Kotchandpur upazila parishad premises around 2pm on Saturday.
