A person was killed and 15 others injured in a clash between two factions of Awami League in Tikari Bazar in Jhenaidah district on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Arif Hossain, 22, son of Toyeb Ali of the village. He was an activist of Awami League.
Jhenaidah police station Officer-in-charge Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury confirmed about the death to the Dhaka Tribune.
Of the injured, six were rushed to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital while remaining were sent to Magura Sadar Hospital.
Locals said there was a longstanding conflict between Fursundi Union Parishad Chairman Sahid Sikder and AL district unit member Advocate Abdul Malek over establishing supremacy in the area.
Over the same matter, supporters of Abdul Malek attacked Sahid Sikder’s nephew Sariful Sikder that triggered a clash between both the groups at around 7:30pm.
Later, the supporters of Abdul Malek also attacked the law enforcers when they tried to bring the situation under control.
In retaliation, police fired several rounds of bullets that left Arif dead on the spot.
OC Iqbal Bahar said both the groups had exchanged fire and even the police fired bullets to disperse the AL activists. But it could not be confirmed that whose bullet had killed Arif.
He said the body was sent to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
