Foreign diplomats to be briefed today

The Foreign Ministry is set to brief foreign diplomats to explain the government’s position on the recent election, today.

Newly appointed State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam will brief the diplomats at the ministry at 3pm, said a Bangladesh diplomat.

It will be the first briefing for the diplomats by the government after its formation last Sunday.

“We will explain them what the prime minister said after Sunday’s swearing-in ceremony on Thursday or early next week,” said the diplomat.

On Sunday, the prime minister told journalists that her government wanted to create a national consensus in a bid to save public life and property, ensure security to the minorities, stop political vengeance and maintain all political activities without any violence.

On Monday, the newly appointed state minister told journalists he would inform the foreign diplomats that the new government would continue onwards for five years.

“We will represent ourselves as five-year tenure government,” he said in response to a question.

Regarding the credibility of the election, he said the government did not consider the pressure from foreign governments to be a threat.

The junior minister said: “We held an election and my personal view is that the government should run for five years.”

On the other hand, senior BNP leaders held a meeting with a group of foreign diplomats at Heritage Hotel in the city’s Gulshan area which endured for about an hour on Monday. The dip[lomats were briefed on the country’s latest political situation, the party’s stance on the election and formation of the new government.

Diplomats or representatives from 34 countries and agencies, including the European Union, US, UK, Canada, India, Pakistan and Arab nations, were present at the meeting.
