Junior foreign minister to brief diplomats

Update : 13 Jan 2014, 07:57 PM

The foreign ministry will brief foreign diplomats to explain the government’s position on the recent election and the next course of action.

“We will explain them what the prime minister said after Sunday’s swearing-in ceremony on Thursday or early next week,” said a Bangladesh diplomat.

The prime minister on Sunday told journalists that her government wanted to create a national consensus in a bid to save public life and property, ensure security to the minorities, stop political vengeance and maintain all political activities without any violence.

Yesterday, the newly appointed state minister for foreign affairs, Md Shahriar Alam, told journalists he would inform the foreign diplomats that the new government would continue for five years.

“We will represent ourselves as five-year tenure government,” he said in response to a question.

In response to another question on credibility of the election, he said the government did not consider the pressure from foreign governments as a threat.

The junior minister said: “We held an election and my personal view is that the government should run for five years.”
