PM meets president to discuss situation

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met with President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban yesterday to inform him about the January 5 polls and discuss the law and order situation.

Briefing the media about the meeting, President’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said the prime minister assured the president that her government was firm in maintaining the country’s law and order situation at any cost.

He said: “The premier informed the president about the January 5 elections and law and order in the country during and after the 10th general elections.”

Karim said the president thanked the Election Commission and the officials concerned for holding the polls in a fair manner and also congratulated the newly-elected lawmakers for their victory.

Replying to a query on whether the premier and the president discussed anything about the formation of the new government or dissolving of the existing parliament,the press secretary said: “As per the rule, the process of government formation starts after the EC releases the gazette.”

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and Prime Minister’s Law Adviser Shafiq Ahmed also attended the meeting.

Earlier, the premier entered Bangabhaban at 4:15pm and went out around 5:54pm. It was the first meeting of the premier with the president after the 10th general polls.
