Gambling has been increasing alarmingly in Madaripur district, causing anti-social crime.
According to sources, there are around 200 gambling dens in Sidikhan, Mathabhanga, Bottola, Chokdar Bridege area under Chardoulatkhan union of Kalkini upazila, Ghatak Char area under Sadar upazila and Charmugria Bandar area under municipality area.
The dens were established under the pretext of different clubs and organisations.
Sources say the dens are increasing in number day by day, and getting support from local influential people.
Passers-by fear travelling through the areas, as the gamblers snatch everything.
A section of the local youth start gambling every evening.
Seeking anonymity a person said, “My son gets involved in gambling and snatches money from the passers-by.”
Human rights activist Fatema Begum said, “Gambling is spoiling the lives of youths in the areas.”
Youths are getting involved in betting, and committing robbery to get money. As a result, the number of robberies has increased in the district.
Human rights activist Salauddin said, “No one lodges any complaints with police against the gamblers.”
Superintendent of Police-Khandakar Faridul Islam said, “Gambling is an anti-social crime and we conduct drives daily to stop it.”
“We request that locals help police by providing information” he said.
