Update : 05 Jan 2014, 07:27 AM

An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist died when Jamaat men attacked on a polling centre in Ramganj upazila, Lakshmipur on Sunday during parliamentary polls.

Polling in five stations were halted. A policeman was injured while thwarting an attempt to snatch away ballot boxes in Ramganj-1 constituency.

About 20 Jamaat-e-Islami supporters pounced on Masumpur Government Primary School, Lakshmipur police Additional Superintendent Sharif Uddin said.

Law enforcers intervened and clashes ensued, he said. “Both parties resorted to exchange of gunfire.” However, he could not confirm the death news.

Sub Inspector Farhad was injured in the clash that took place, he said. The presiding officer of this polling station had run away.

Ramganj upazila BNP General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said a shibir activist Rubel died in the clash. His body was being kept in the locality.

Meanwhile, presiding officers said miscreants had snatched away ballots in four other polling stations throughout the upazila. Votes were suspended there.
