Update : 05 Jan 2014, 07:12 AM

Two opposition supporters died during clashes with police during attack on a polling station in Sonagazi upazila, Feni on Sunday during parliamentary elections.

At least five others, including policemen, were shot during the clash that took place during a nationwide anti-polls hartal of the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

About 600 BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters, armed with sticks, attacked North Charchandia Government Primary School around 10am, police said.

The injured were identified as Sharif, 25, and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal General Secretary Jamshed Alam, 26.

BNP-Jamaat activists were attacking polling centres since Saturday, Sonagazi police Officer-in-Charge Subhash Chandra told the Dhaka Tribune.

“They opened fire on policemen,” he said. “The law enforcers were compelled to fire back.” Some policemen were injured at scene.

Feni police Superintendent Paritosh Ghosh confirmed one of the death to the Dhaka Tribune. “Six others sustained bullet injuries at scene.”

Feni Sadar Hospital Emergency Medical Officer Mohammad Elias told the Dhaka Tribune that both the bodies were being kept at the hospital.
