BCL beat DU student suspected of Shibir membership

Update : 22 Dec 2013, 07:17 PM

Bangladesh Chhatra League unit of Dhaka University’s Ziaur Rahman Hall early yesterday handed over a student to Shahbagh police after beating him severely, suspecting him to be an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

The detainee was Fakhrul Islam, a first year student of the university’s Finance Department.

Witnesses said the hall unit General Secretary Motaher Hossain Prince Fakhrul called Fakhrul Islam to the hall guest room around 12am and, with his accomplices, beat him mercilessly.

The hall provost rushed to the spot after hearing of the attack, and handed over Fakhrul to police after rescuing him from the agitated students.

DU Proctor Amzad Ali said Fakhrul was allegedly proven to be a Shibir activist after a search of his mobile phone.

General Secretary Prince told the Dhaka Tribune: “Fakhrul has direct links to Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists. We got evidence after searching his cell phone.”

Shirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh police station, said at first Fakhrul was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary treatment, and the police was now conducting an investigation into the allegations, adding that no case had yet been filed.

Meanwhile, Chhatra League activists from different halls of the university have been conducting drives to out Shibir activists, in order to avoid any kind of subversive activities during the blockade period, sources said.
