Violence resistance committees formed in districts and upazilas

Update : 18 Dec 2013, 08:47 PM

A series of new committees have been formed across the country to resist the Jamaat-Shibir violence that has been causing huge loss of life and property.

The committees under the banner: “Spirit of Liberation War Implementation Mancha,” came into being in districts and upazilas to ward off the violence of the hartals and blockades sponsored by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

The 18-party alliance had long been demanding a caretaker government system under which to hold the next general elections.

The move was initiated by the deputy commissioners after the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs asked the former to form such committees by December 13.

On December 9, the ministry issued letters to the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers in this regard.

According to the letters, the committee has been formed at upazila level by inducting 31 members into it.

A former commander of the freedom fighters is the convener of the committee.

Similarly, at district level a 101-member committee has been formed with the former commander as its convener.

“I received a letter on December 9 and a committee entitled  “Spirit of Liberation War Implementation Mancha,” was formed in my upazila,” an anonymous UNO from Kishoreganj told the Dhaka Tribune over the phone.

The official said the UNOs and DCs had been relieved of their convenor-ships at upazila and district levels by the freedom fighter’s command councils.

The official added that from now on former freedom fighters’ commanders would head up the committee.

“We have decided to organise the platform to resist the violence of Jamaat-Shibir,” Vice-President of Jatiya Sramik League, and Shipping and Liberation War Affairs Minister, Shajahan Khan told the Dhaka Tribune.

Shajahan is the convener of the central committee of the Spirit of Liberation War Implementation Mancha.

The minister hoped that the newly formed committees would be able to build up resistance against the Jamaat-Shibir violence.

A freedom fighter, on condition of anonymity, said when Jamaat-Shibir ran riot freedom fighters could not sit idle.
