3.5 crore ballot papers to be printed

The Election Commission ordered the government press to print around 3.5 crores of ballot papers through issuing a letter yesterday.

The printing process is to start within two to three days, an EC official said yesterday. According to the latest statistics of EC, 154 lone candidates are set to be elected unopposed in 59 districts parliamentary constituencies for the 10th parliamentary election slated for January 5, 2014.

Out of 541 valid candidates, 387 are contesting in the election.

Of the total 154 candidates who are set to be elected unopposed, 127 are from Awami League, 18 from Jatiya Party and three from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), two from Workers Party of Bangladesh and one from Anwar Hossain Manju-led Jatiya Party.

Awami League and Jatiya Party candidates would contest for 26 parliamentary seats.

However, there are no candidates against Awami League in 21 parliamentary constituencies as individual candidates are contesting.
