Jamaat’s hartal marked amid blasts, arson

The nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami was marked on Sunday amid blasts, arson and procession by the Shibir cadres.

Islami Chhatra Shibir men locked in clashes with law enforcers in different places of the capital.

A CNG-run auto-rickshaw was set to fire by Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in capital’s Matuail under Jatrabari police station at around 7am when they brought out a brisk procession from a side lane alongside explosions of crude bombs.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station, said they disperse the procession and locals put out the fire.

In Mothertek, four Shibir cadres were arrested by the members of Mughda police station for attacking police with brick and crude bombs.

Police said the Shibir cadres brought out a procession at around 8am and four of them were arrested when they hurled four crude bombs and brick at the law enforcers.

A clash took place between police and Shibir activists of Jagannath University at Banglabazar in the capital’s old town at around 9am.

Shibir men hurled bombs and brick while police fired rubber bullets during the clash that erupted when Shibir members brought out a procession along with explosions of crude bombs.

In Shyampur, another clash took place in Shyampur at around 7:30am when Shibir supporters brought out a procession with explosions of crude bombs.

Later, police chased the procession at Karimullabagh.

Four of the Shibir cadres were also arrested with several crude bombs, said Shaympur OC Abdur Rashid.

Meanwhile, two cadres of Islami Chatra Shibir were arrested with a huge quantity of gunpowder and bomb making materials at a den of at the capital’s Kalyanpur in the morning.
