Two leaders of the Awami Legaue were expelled from the party for pursuing participation in the upcoming January 5 elections as rebel candidates.
Nayeb Ali Joarder, freedom fighters’ affairs secretary, was eyeing the Jhenaidah-1 constituency while Shafiqul Islam Khan, district vice president of AL, was attempting for Jhenaidah-3.
The decision to expel the duo was taken in a meeting with district Awami League President Abdul Hayee, the unit’s secretary Aziur Rahman said.
“The move has been made in line with section 46 of the constitution,” he said.
Shafiqul Islam Khan said he heard about the decision. “I was not called in for an explanation. The district committee cannot do this.”
Nayeb Ali Joarder said only the chief of the party, Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, reserved the right to expel him.
