Activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of the Bangladeshi arm of the Jamaat-e-Islami, have allegedly vandalized the nameplate of the Chetana’71 sculpture, which was built commemorating the Liberation War of Bangladesh on the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST).
The incident occurred at around 9pm on Thursday.
Sources said the Shibir activists brought out a procession in the campus and later proceeded to take down the nameplate.
Nur-e-Alam, convener of the SUST unit of “Amra Muktijuddhar Santan,” condemned the heinous incident, blaming the Jamaat-Shibir men for destroying the nameplate that carried the glory and significance of the liberation war as a part of their countrywide rampage aimed at foiling the trials of the war criminals.
SUST Proctor Nilay Chandra Sircar said, “Those who never wanted the independence of the country are to blame for this.”
