One Islami Chhatra Shibir activist died when police clashed with Jamaat-e-Islami clashed with law enforcers in Monoharganj upazila of Comilla Thursday night.
At least 40 others, including 25 shot and three policemen, were said to have been injured in the incident.
The incident took place after the apex Bangladesh court dismissed the review petition on the death sentence of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla.
Jamaat supporters brought out a protest rally in Bipulsar area around 8pm in the night after review on Quader Molla was dismissed, witnesses said.
Clashes ensued when police intervened. At least 40 others were injured at scene, 25 were said to have been shot, witnesses said.
Monoharganj police Officer-in-Charge said paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) opened fire at scene. “One Shibir man died during the clash.”
“Police fired 200 rounds of live gunfire to tame situation. Three policemen have been injured at scene,” he added.
The dead was identified as Anwar, 20, son of Abul Khair from Natherapetua union in the upazila. Police said they could not recover the body.
