Taranco meets foreign envoys

Update : 11 Dec 2013, 10:29 AM

UN envoy Oscar Fernandez-Taranco has sat in a meeting with the foreign envoys in Bangladesh at Hotel Westin on Wednesday.

Officials accompanying the visiting UN envoy confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday afternoon.

According to sources, Fernandez-Taranco, who had been tight-lipped about the dialogue initiatives, has sat in the meeting to discuss the current political situation of the country with the foreign mission chiefs in Bangladesh.

He was scheduled to leave the country on Tuesday. But, he postponed his departure from Dhaka by 24 hours to initiate a fruitful dialogue between the top leaders of the two major political parties.

After initiating the dialogue successfully, Taranco on Tuesday said the government and the opposition were engaged in a dialogue to resolve the current conflict at the intervention of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

“At the invitation of the UN secretary-general, representatives from both parties have met and engaged in a dialogue,” the UN assistant secretary-general for political affairs said at a sudden informal press briefing.

“I have decided to extend my stay here in Bangladesh given the positive developments that have been taking place,” he said. “Both sides have agreed to continue their dialogue in a spirit of goodwill and compromise.”

He has held meetings with the prime minister, the leader of the opposition, the Jatiya Party chairman and other concerned authorities during his visit.

Taranco is set to address the press about this visit in the evening.
