Update : 10 Dec 2013, 08:14 AM

Visiting UN envoy Oscar Fernandez-Taranco is said to mediate a secretary level dialogue between the Awami League and the BNP to resolve the ongoing political deadlock over polls.

The news of the meeting spread out after Taranco went to a Baridhara residence Tuesday afternoon.

Our correspondent Sheikh Shahriar Zaman reports, Taranco entered house no 28 of road no 7 in Baridhara at around 1:30pm.

Private television channels in Dhaka report that an UNDP official lives at the flat.

The motocade of Taranco left the residence around 3:09pm. But, it was not sure whether Taranco was in the car, reports our correspondent Mohammad Al-Masum Molla.

According to television reports, a meeting is likely to be held between Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in presence of Taranco at the residence.

The envoy is in Bangladesh on deputation of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for what is being said "to broker a political deal" ahead of the elections.

Taranco met the prime minister, the BNP chairperson, the speaker of Parliament, the foreign minister, the chief election commissioner, leaders of major political parties, and the representatives of civil society and the media during his busy time in Dhaka.

He will complete his mission through holding a press conference in the afternoon after his second meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Late Naziur Rahman Monjur, father of BJP Chairman Abdaleev Rahman Partha, belonged to the residence.

Naziur Rahman Monjur formed the Bangadesh Jatiya Party (BJP) after resigning from Ershad’s Jatiya Party. After his father's death, Partha became the chief of the party.
