Arrest warrant against Tarique to be withdrawn

Update : 09 Dec 2013, 12:17 PM

An order asking withdrawal of arrest warrant for BNP senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman regarding a money laundering case has been sent to respective authorities on Monday.

Bench assistant of Special Judge’s Court-3 Ariful Islam told the Dhaka Tribune: ‘‘We sent the recall order on Monday to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and deputy commissioner of prosecution.”

Judge Md Motahar Hossain of special Judge Court-3 issued the order on November 17.

Earlier, on August 8, 2011, the court issued an arrest warrant against Tarique Rahman. Later on May 26 this year, the court issued an arrest warrant through Interpol against Tarique Rahman.

The court mentioned in its order that since Tarique Rahman has been acquitted from the money laundering case unconditionally, all the warrants issued against him should be withdrawn without execution.

Earlier on November 17, the court acquitted BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman while awarding his close friend Giasuddin Al Mamun to a seven-year jail term in the money laundering case, which involved Tk204.1m.

The court also fined Mamun Tk400m while pronouncing the verdict in the much-talked high-profile graft case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).

Later on December 5, the Anti-Corruption Commission filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the lower court verdict that acquitted BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman in the case.
