Taranco-AL top brass meet again, media avoided

Update : 09 Dec 2013, 06:30 AM

United Nations' Assistant Secretary Genereal Oscar Fernandez-Taranco met top Awami League brass for the second time in two days on Monday.

However, no disclosures were made at the end of the nearly one hour meeting held at the Gulshan residence of prime minister's foreign affairs advisor Gowher Rizvi.

Among others present in the meeting were the party's Secretary General Syed Ashraful Islam, Tofail Ahmed, Faruk Khan and Mahbubul Alam Hanif.

This meeting took place after the UN envoy had a meeting with Jamaat-e-Islami and said to have talked about the upcoming national elections.

The envoy is in Bangladesh on deputation of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for what is being said "to broker a political deal" ahead of the elections.

On Sunday, Taranco met Jatiya Party, Chief Election Commissioner, civil society and visited the Prime Minister's Office.

Earlier, he had asked the prime minister whether the January 5 elections could be deferred. He supported polls under the constitution but observed the need for a level-playing field.

A day after this meeting, Awami League said they had no problem with the elections deferred.

Taranco also said to have requested the Election Commission to defer the polls date. CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said “everything is possible if legal.”
