Update : 06 Dec 2013, 07:00 AM

Detective Branch (DB) of police detained central Chhatra Dal president Abdul Kader Bhuiyan and city unit Vice-president (North) Sharif Uddin from city’s Uttara area early Friday.

They were detained around 4am for his alleged involvement with arson attack, vandalism and attack on police conducted during the recent countrywide blockade, our Correspondent reports.

Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Media) confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

Following the arrest, some 50 to 60 activists led by Jahangirnagar University’s Chhatra Dal unit Joint Secretary, Sohel Rana, staged a demonstration in front of the university’s Prantik Gate, demanding Bhuiyan’s immediate release around 12:30pm.

They threatened to launch a tougher programme if Abdul Kader Bhuiyan is not released within 24 hours.

Later, the Chhatra Dal activists reportedly vandalised a bus of Jonosheba Paribahan and set it on fire. They also set off two crude bombs during the demonstration.

University Proctor Prof Md Muzibur Rahman visited the spot after the incident.

Muzibur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “Some miscreants have torched a passenger bus and exploded two crude bombs in front of Prantik Gate.”

However, he did not confirm whether the vandals were JU Chhatra Dal members.

“We have informed Ashulia police immediately the incident,” he said.

Sohel Rana and Ashulia police station Officer-in-charge Md Sheikh Badrul Alam could not be reached over thephones for their comments.
