Police thwarted an arson attempt in Mirpur area of the capital on Monday morning, the third day of the 72-hour countrywide blockade of the 18-party alliance. Witnesses said a group of some 30 to 35 blockade supporters brought out a flash procession and exploded 10 crude bombs in Mirpur 11 area around 9:30am. The blockaders later vandalised a Bikalpa Paribahan bus, poured petrol and tried to set the bus on fire before police intervened, they said. A local shopkeeper, Azim, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Some 30 to 35 men in disguise of office-goers suddenly entered the area, chanted anti-government slogans and exploded 10 crude bombs.” Patrol police in the area said they fired about five rounds of shots in the air in order to foil the attempt. Pallabi police Sub-Inspector Mohammad Nafis confirmed the news to the Dhaka Tribune and said a joint team of the police and Rab were raiding nearby areas to detain the miscreants. Panic was persisting in the area.
