CEC: No scope to extend nomination deadline

Update : 01 Dec 2013, 02:10 PM

The Election Commission is moving ahead with its preparations for the elections, but hinted there could be “changes” if the two main political parties reach a consensus.

The message was conveyed by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Sunday evening.

The December 2 deadline to submit nomination papers will remain unchanged for the time being, the CEC said. “There is no scope to change this.”

However, he reiterated that a consensus between the two major political parties might lead to alterations.

The comments came a day ahead of the nomination submission deadline and during agitation by the main opposition BNP who are demanding that a caretaker government oversee the polls.

The election commission had slated the elections for January 5 in an announcement on November 26. The last day for nomination submission was set as December 2.

The main opposition BNP had rejected that deadline and called for tougher agitation. They have demanded the annulment of the polls-schedule.

The violence arising from the conflict between the two main political parties has already claimed many lives.

However, the country is heading for elections despite these incidents, which have already caught the attention of international observers.
