'EC might extend submission date, if BNP joins'

Update : 01 Dec 2013, 12:50 PM

The Election Commission (EC) will reconsider the issue of extending the deadline for the submission of nomination papers if the main opposition BNP participates in the polls, Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Hasanul Haque Inu said.

He made the statement while addressing the inaugural session of the handicraft exhibition at the national museum in the capital, on Sunday.

He said: “The EC may extend the deadline for nomination paper submission, if the main opposition party will join the polls.

The path of dialogue is still open. Talks can take place anytime, if the opposition wants to," he added.

Claiming that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has directed her party members to launch violence by rejecting the invitation for dialogue, he said: “The opposition men are killing people by setting buses on fire in the name of movement.”

Blaming militant and fundamental forces as the main threats to the country's development, the minister further said all pro-liberation forces should be united to foil any ill attempt by the evil forces.

The EC have fixed December 2 as the last date for the collection and submission of nomination papers. The election is scheduled to be held on January 5.

The main opposition BNP has rejected the polls schedule and declared that it would not join the polls until the restoration of the non-partisan caretaker government.

Earlier, a Supreme Court verdict had scrapped the caretaker government system.
