BNP: Suspend polls-schedule

Update : 01 Dec 2013, 11:59 AM

BNP urged the Election Commission to suspend the incumbent polls-schedule and organise “meaningful” elections with the participation of all parties.

The statement came a day before the deadline to submit nomination papers for the upcoming 10th general elections, slated for January 5.

The call was conveyed in a press statement signed by the party's acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday.

“The reformed cabinet led by the Awami League Grand Alliance is governing the country illegally. This government does not have any moral right to rule,” Fakhrul said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet violated the existing official rule by not forgoing ministerial privileges upon declaring a “so-called” polls-schedule, the statement said.

The statement said the polls-schedule thrust the country into an extreme political crisis. “Brave people are sacrificing their lives for democratic rights.”

It claimed that the government was deploying law enforcers to suppress “this rightful movement.”

The statement also condemned the recent arrests of BNP leaders, including the party's joint general secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

BNP claimed Awami League was creating this situation to stay in power.

The Election Commission had declared a polls-schedule on November 26.

On that very day, BNP rejected it and demanded cancellation of the schedule.
