At least 30 people, including a policeman, were injured when they locked horns with law enforcers in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur on Sunday.
The incident occurred during a nationwide blockade programme of the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance amidst an on-going political violence.
The local BNP unit called a daylong hartal in Kaliakoir upazila for Monday in protest to what they claim was a police assault on their peaceful rally.
Witnesses said local BNP brought out a procession, led by district BNP Secretary Kazi Saydul Alam Babul, on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the morning.
Clashes ensued when police intervened in the By-pass area.
Kaliakoir police Officer-in-Charge Omar Faruk said the BNP supporters were trying to put up a blockade on the highway. “We foiled their attempt.”
BNP district Secretary Kazi Saydul Alam Babul said police had attacked their peaceful rally. “We condemn the attack and call a hartal in Kaliakoir for Monday.”
