The 10th parliamentary elections will be held on January 5, 2014.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the polls schedule at his address to the nation this evening.
“The commission has waited for a political consensus. But we cannot wait anymore,” said the CEC.
The last date for submitting nomination papers was set to December 2.
The Election Commission will scrutinise nomination papers from December 5 to 6. The candidates can withdraw their nominations until the deadline of December 13.
Earlier in the afternoon, an election commissioner, seeking anonymity, had confirmed the Dhaka Tribune that the elections would be held on January 5.
Dhaka Tribune had run an article on the election date referring to the election commissioner.
