Update : 23 Nov 2013, 08:19 PM

Environment and Forest Minister Hasan Mahmud yesterday said legal measures would be taken against acting BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as he had taken accepted the responsibilities for violence during opposition’s movements.

“Mirza Fakhrul has accepted the responsibilities for the arson, vandalism and blast by stirring Chhatra Dal men by saying that vandalism of one or two vehicles would not bring any result,” the minister said at a press conference held at the Circuit House in the port city in the afternoon.

Mahmud, also the publicity secretary of the ruling Awami League, said already a number of BNP leaders had been sued on specific charges; if needed measures would be taken against Fakhrul, as specific allegations had arisen against him.

“Mirza Fakhrul’s speech made it clear to us that the BNP chairperson and her party leaders are instigating subversive activities,” he said, adding that they would have to take the responsibility for the sabotage across the country.

The minister also said doors for BNP were still open to join the all-party government, adding that the party would get more ministries than Jatiya Party. “We should wait for the main opposition till the last moment to eradicate the disagreement between us.”

The minister urged the BNP to contest the next parliamentary elections instead of holding the people of the country hostage.
