Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday asked the main opposition BNP to stay away from its “attempts to intimidate him.”
“I was a soldier. I do not fear anything. So don’t try to frighten me,” said Ershad, apparently in reaction to the burning of his effigies by some BNP activists.
The former military dictator was speaking at a reception programme of the Jatiya Party ministers appointed to the polls-time cabinet.
“You [BNP] will have to face the same retaliation,” he warned.
The party will hold processions across the country protesting the burning of his effigies by BNP activists, Ershad announced.
He said: “The Jatiya Party ministers in the newly formed cabinet are not Awami League’s ministers. They will oversee the elections.”
Terming the former Awami League government oppressive and corrupt, Ershad said: “There was no way except joining the polls to eliminate the government.”
The Jatiya Party Chairman also urged his party leaders and activists to be ready for any kind of movement.
