Ershad quits Grand Alliance, moves for polls

Update : 18 Nov 2013, 06:15 AM

Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad on Monday officially quit the Grand Alliance and announced of participating elections separately.

The former military ruler however refrained from commenting on the separate alliance he spoke of earlier.

Speaking at a press briefing at his Banani office, he asserted his participation in the polls was to for power and not to put anyone else in power.

The move to quit the Awami League-led alliance comes amidst uncertainty over if main opposition BNP would join the elections slated for January.

The two main political parties have reigned the country over their disparity and the fight for power, he claimed. “We don’t want this.”

Ershad also warned of boycotting the elections if the government was willing to hold “a one-sided elections.”

“We want everyone to participate in polls. We say to the BNP: come and join in discussions.”

He confirmed Jatiya Party’s participation in what he said all-party cabinet and added that it was a move towards participation in the elections.

“This is an all-party cabinet, not Awami League’s cabinet,” he said.

When asked about caretaker government, he said: “I don’t like caretaker government. They all have been unkind to me.”

On the note of elections, he said he was participating in it to help the country.
