The acquittal of Tarique Rahman will not affect the on-going movements of the opposition, BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday.
“The verdict proved that Tarique was innocent, the cases were false and stemmed from political vengeance,” he told journalists.
“This conspiracy against the Zia family will never succeed,” he added.
BNP senior vice chairman and son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman was acquitted in a money laundering case earlier on Sunday.
However, his friend and business associate Giasuddin Al Mamun was sentenced to seven years in jail and a Tk400m fine.
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir hailed the verdict provided by a Dhaka court.
Regarding the incumbent movement, Fakhrul said his party was struggling for the democratic right of the people. “Tarique Rahman has nothing to do with this.”
Political activities will continue until democracy is established, he asserted.
