Update : 13 Nov 2013, 09:22 PM

Election Commission on Wednesday asked deputy commissioners, regional election and district elections officers to appoint about 700,000 elections officials to conduct the parliamentary polls.

EC has also asked them to send a primary list of election officials to the commission by November 25. The letter was signed by EC Senior Assistant Secretary Farhad Hossain.

After finalising the primary list of election officials EC will train them up. These officials will work as presiding, assistant presiding and polling officers during the elections.

However, the training of 2700 trainers, who will train presiding, assistant presiding and polling officers, starts on November 17.

Election Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz said the EC would formally appoint the officials after the announcement of the polls schedule.

One of the ten directives of the letter says those who work for a candidate cannot be appointed as an election official.

EC officials said the EC has selected 38,000 primary polling centres for holding the next parliamentary elections.

Officials and employees of schools, colleges, government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions will be appointed as presiding, assistant presiding and polling officers at these polling centres. The number of polling booths is approximately 200,000.

The Representation of the People Order (RPO) stipulates that each polling centre should have one presiding officer while each polling booth an assistant presiding officer and two polling officers.

The article 9(1) of the RPO states that the returning officer will send letters to government, private offices, school, college and university asking them to appoint presiding, assistant presiding and polling officers.
