BNP top brass on streets, stirs port city loyals

Update : 12 Nov 2013, 09:30 PM

BNP central leaders in Chittagong have recently increased their presence in the anti-government campaign to reinstate the caretaker administration that has reportedly boosted the confidence of local leaders and activists.

Presence of Abdullah Al Noman, vice-chairman of the party, Mir Mohammed Nasiruddin, adviser to the party chairperson, and Golam Akbar Khandaker, an organising secretary of the party, on streets have been quite strongly felt on the past few hartal days.

Earlier, city unit leaders used to hold rallies in front of the party office of Nasiman Bhaban during shutdowns but now the active participation of central leaders has encouraged them to spread over different parts of the city.

However, a city unit leader, preferring anonymity, said the central leaders were just attending some routine programmes adding that the city unit leaders were mainly leading the movement.

“A few number of central leaders are turning up at the programmes just to seal their position in the party at the end of the current government’s tenure,” he said.

Mir Mohammed Nasiruddin told the Dhaka Tribune they were working to force the government to reinstate the caretaker government system. “The participation of central leaders is inspiring the party activists in the movement.”

“We have spread the movement to 41 wards of the city, which was earlier limited to just a few particular areas,” he said.

The adviser to the party chairperson said he had earlier discharged various duties both in the government and in the party adding that he had nothing more to expect or show off to ensure his position.

Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, city unit BNP president, told the Dhaka Tribune that the participation of the central leaders was inspiring the local leaders and activists.

“We all are working together to reinstate the caretaker government system,” he said adding that the government would very soon be forced to meet their demand.
