JP (Monju) to contest next polls, but won’t join 14-party alliance

Update : 11 Nov 2013, 07:23 PM

Jatiya Party (Monju), a former ally of the BNP-led alliance, on Monday said it would contest the next general elections, but would not join the Awami League-led alliance.

Anwar Hossain Manju, who is considered as an important “player” in Bangladeshi politics, made the announcement after a meeting to exchange views with the 14-party ruling alliance.

Manju said he would also maintain contact with the main opposition BNP.

“I will contest the polls, if it takes place. But I have not joined the 14-party alliance,” he told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday after the meeting.

The former minister said participating in the polls was the choice of the respective political parties

“If she (Khaleda Zia) does not participate, it does not mean that I will follow (her),” Manju said. “I am not so helpless”.

Elections were necessary for continuity of the democratic process, he added.

“If the BNP decides to contest the polls, I will hold a meeting with them, too,” he said. “Then I will decide the side.”

Manju added that he had not met with former party chief HM Ershad to discuss the elections.

Earlier, Manju had a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Gonobhaban residence to discuss his party’s participation in the upcoming polls, which must take place by January 24.
