BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has not been kept under house arrest, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir has said, Sunday afternoon.
Mentioning that the government is responsible for the security of the opposition leader, the minister said: “The security measures have been strengthened around her residence as part of the responsibility.”
He made the statement while speaking to journalists while on his way out of his office at the ministry.
Referring to people, who were killed during recent hartals enforced by BNP, the minister said: “People, who lost their relatives during the recent hartals are angry with the opposition leader. The government has information that some of the angry relatives may attack the house of the opposition leader."
"So, we have taken security measures to ensure her safety," he added.
Earlier, on Saturday, security measures had been strengthened in front of Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence ahead of the hartal.
