CPB, BSD urges AL, BNP to work together to resolve political crisis

Update : 08 Nov 2013, 10:10 PM

Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) leaders on Friday urged the two major political parties, Awami League and BNP, to take effective steps for resolving the ongoing political crisis and holding a free and fair parliamentary election.

They also demanded highest punishments for the war criminals and ban on religion-based political parties including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami while speaking at a joint-rally organised by CPB and BSD at the capital’s Suhrawardi Uddyan.

The leaders called on the other democratic parties of the country to form a left-leaning alternative political platform.

Speaking at the rally, CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim said: “Awami League should consider the caretaker government issue while BNP should exclude Jamaat-e-Islami from their alliance for the greater interest of the country.”

Ensuring a level playing field for the upcoming national polls is not just an issue for AL and BNP, rather it is an issue for all the citizens of the country, he said.

“If both parties cannot resolve their differences over the polls-time government, the county might face an undemocratic situation like one-eleven again,” the CPB chief said.

There is a scheme going on to keep people away from election, he said.

Terming Jamaat-Shibir and Hefazat as the biggest threats to the country’s democracy, he said: “If the government cannot control these groups, the country will surely face communal violence.”

“We have jointly finalised 300 nominations for the election, but if any democratic party wants to join us, we would like to form an alliance with them.”

If the government and opposition are sincere in resolving the political crisis, it will take a day only. The government have to initiate steps to resolve the political crisis, BSD general secretary Khalequzzaman addressed to the rally.

With BNP and AL-led governments, there were no democracy at the country, he said.

The rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads.
