BNP, Jamaat clash with police

BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists were locked into clashes yesterday with police at several points on Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Sitakunda upazila under the district in protest against arrests of their party activists.

The opposition men blocked the highway and vandalised at least 15 vehicles during the three-hour blockade from 10:30am to 1:30pm, said police. 

The blockade led to a long tailback on both sides of Dhaka-Chittagong road causing immense sufferings to commuters of different routes.

There were no report of any further arrests from the spot or any casualties in this connection.

Some activists of local BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir put barricade on the highway in Barabkunda area under the upazila demanding quick release of 19 their activists who were held Thursday night.

Syed Iqbal Ali, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Sitakunda Circle, told the Dhaka Tribune BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men were locked into clashes with police around 10:30am as members of law enforcement agency rushed to remove the blockade.

Police fired several rounds of blank shots to disperse the protesters, he said.

BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men also put barricade on the highway in Amirabad, Shuklalhat and bypass area while police rushed there and dispersed the protesters.

Police took control of the situation around 1pm while vehicular movement resumed half an hour later.

Border Guard Bangladesh troops deployed in the upazila earlier had been patrolling the areas to keep the situation calm.
