PM: Spare the children, don't call strike

Update : 31 Oct 2013, 11:31 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged opposition chief Khaleda Zia to refrain from enforcing strikes during the exam season for the sake of the country’s children.

Slating the BNP chairperson on her educational background, Hasina stressed that Khaleda did not want the children to pass in their examinations.

She was referring to the Junior School Certificate and Junior Dakhil Certificate examinations that is expected to begin from November 4.

BNP is expected to hold programmes from November 4-6, meida reported.

While addressing a crowd in Gazipur Thursday afternoon, the prime minister also sought votes for Awami League in the next elections to maintain the pace of development in the country.

Ruling Awami League-led government and BNP-led opposition are in disparity over how the next general elections will take place.

The recent phone conversation between the two top political leaders of the country – Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia – did not yield any solutions.

The government wants an all-party administration to oversee the upcoming national elections while the opposition alliance is demanding a caretaker government.

The next general elections are probable by mid-January.

BNP-led main opposition 18-party alliance had carried out a 60-hour hartal from October 27 demanding the government’s initiative towards the dialogue for a caretaker system.

At least 14 people died during the nationwide shutdown in three days.

In her Thursday speech, Hasina addressed the casualties and blamed Khaleda Zia for them.

Hasina inaugurated the country's first metro rail project from the programme.
