Two crude bombs were set off in front of the Election Commission office at around 1pm on Sunday, witnesses said.
Sunday marked the first day of the 60-hour hartal enforced by BNP.
No one has been injured in the blast, our correspondent reported.
Police have beefed up security in the area following the blast.
The opposition BNP has consistenly claimed the EC cannot work "freely" under the current government.
