National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and opposition’s Chief Whip Nahid Islam has warned that his party will not allow the government to remain in power if it fails to implement the people’s verdict in the referendum.
He made the remarks at a mass rally organised by NCP’s Dhaka South unit on Shaheed Faruk Road in Jatrabari on Friday afternoon.
“We want to make it clear that NCP joined the mass uprising for change and reforms and later contested the election. We urged people to vote ‘Yes’ in the referendum, saying it would bring reforms to the country,” Nahid said.
He accused the government of betraying the people, the July mass uprising and the thousands who died during the movement.
Calling the government “deceptive” and “betraying”, Nahid said factories and businesses were closing due to shortages of gas and electricity.
“People cannot do business because of extortion. If the government fails to change this situation, we will not allow it to remain in power,” he said.
He also criticised the BNP, saying it had been voted into power “not to engage in corruption and plunder.”
Nahid further claimed that the government had broken all records for load-shedding in Bangladesh’s history within just five months.
“We know the history of 2001 to 2006,” he said.
