AL leader confined by party men

Update : 24 Oct 2013, 07:59 PM

Matiar Rahman, Lalmonirhat district AL General Secretary and the district council’s Administrator, was last night confined to a bus counter on Air Port Road in Lalmonirhat for a number of hours after being blocked by his own party’s activists.

The district’s top AL leader was allegedly trying to leave Lalmonirhat in secret without informing any local members of the party, sources said.

The situation was eventually brought under control when additional police were deployed to the station around 10:20pm, police said.

Agitated members of the local AL alleged that Matiar was trying to sneak out of the party’s Lalmonirhat headquarters because a movement inside the party was brooding but had kept field-level party workers in the dark.

AL activists alleged that Matiar enjoyed various benefits from the government and became an overnight millionaire but was now trying to run away in order to save himself and his assets. He had allegedly handled everything, including tenders and recruitment, and deprived others members of the party of the benefits, they said.

Meanwhile, President of Lalmonirhat upazila unit AL Golam Mostafa Swapon, acknowledging the incident had occurred, said: “Matiar Rahman is a top leader in district AL, but he tried to save himself from the impending political situation in the country. Without giving any direction and consulting any of the party members, he tried escape as a political movement is near,” he said.

Not a single party member benefitted from Matiar Rahman, but the leader wanted to save himself only which angered the party men, said Sadar upazila unit AL General Secretary Zahurul Haque Mamun.

When contacted, Matiar Rahman declined to make any comment on the matter.
