Leader of the Opposition and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Friday said people are not only disappointed but also angry with the government's actions, while warning that his party would resist any move it considers to be against public interests.
Speaking at a meeting of the party's Central Majlis-e-Shura at the Al-Falah Auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka, he criticized both the government and the BNP.
Shafiqur said people had hoped for a departure from what he described as fascist politics after August 5, but those in power had prevented that from happening.
He also said successive governments since independence had failed to meet people's expectations.
Referring to the political process, he said that although two votes had been held on the same day, only the vote related to state power had been accepted, while a referendum on reforms had not. He alleged that the government had ignored the people's verdict.
Criticizing the BNP, the Jamaat ameer alleged that the party was planning to build a "fascist structure" by bringing key constitutional bodies—including the Commission on Enforced Disappearances, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Election Commission and the judiciary—under its control after assuming power.
He also stressed the need to ensure a balance of power and urged people to remain steadfast in protecting their rights.
Turning his criticism towards the home minister, Shafiqur alleged that while incidents of violence continued across the country, the minister was neglecting the responsibilities of his ministry and instead interfering in other matters.
Issuing a warning to the government, he said Jamaat-e-Islami would not only protest but also resist any action it deemed to be against the people.
He added that the party's movement against injustice and "evil forces" would continue.
Shafiqur also said if Jamaat made any mistake in taking decisions, people should point it out and protest if necessary.
