Update : 22 Oct 2013, 05:20 PM

A Dhaka Court on Tuesday granted a six-day remand for BNP Assistant Student Affairs Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku in connection with an attempt to murder case filed by Paltan police station.

The police on Monday night assaulted a vehicle in the convoy of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and arrested Tuku in front of the party office at Nayapaltan in the capital.

Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor passed the order after hearing a plea from Investigating Officer Md Babul Hossain seeking a ten-day police remand.

In the remand prayer, the IO said, “The accused needs to be remanded in order to learn as to why the car had attempted to knock down the policemen on duty.”

Defence counsel Md Sanaullah Miah filed a bail petition and a remand rejection prayer. He told the court that the government had arrested Tuku to ruin the opposition’s movement, so his remand prayer should be rejected and bail allowed.

Police mentioned that the accused had tried to knock their officers down with the vehicle while they were maintaining law and order. But police did not arrest the driver of the vehicle.

On Tuesday, Sub-Inspector of Paltan police station, Md Alauddin, filed a case against Tuku, retired Col Md Majid, a CSF member employed for Khaleda Zia’s security, and 15-20 unidentified others, accusing them of obstructing police duty and attempting to murder police members by running them over.

The investigation officer of another case, Sub-Inspector Md Jahangir Hossain of Paltan police, sought a 10-day remand for Tuku in the case where he is accused of attempting to murder police Constable Sultan Ali.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court fixed the day of the hearing for this case after completion of six days police remand.
