Former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has been shown arrested in two cases filed for vandalism and preventing police from carrying out their duties.
Our correspondent says he will be produced before court anytime today with remand plea.
The cases were filed with Paltan Police Station hours after the opposition leader was nabbed from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s convoy on Monday night.
Police picked up Tuku as the law enforcement agency officials and the BNP chairperson’s security force (CSF) locked in a scuffle during her visit to the party headquarters at Nayapaltan.
Khaleda met ailing BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at the party office, but on her way out, the police forces deployed in the area constrained one of the vehicles in her convoy. The vehicle was carrying three members of the CSF and Salahuddin Tuku.
The incident left Khaleda Zia, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with the convoy stranded for half an hour.
In the latest development, BNP denounced the arrest of Tuku and demanded his immediate release.
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir placed the demand while addressing a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. He also demanded removal of the responsible police officials.
