BNP to send formal letter to AL anytime today

Update : 22 Oct 2013, 04:32 AM

The main opposition BNP is set to send a formal letter to Awami League proposing the ruling party to hold dialogue on poll-time interim government anytime today.

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, BNP insiders said BNP acting secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was likely to issue the formal letter to Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam today.

The main opposition BNP on Monday tabled its own formula for an ad-hoc government that would comprise 10 advisers from two previous “successful” caretaker governments.

While placing the proposal at a press conference, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said: “The Prime Minister has left no room for any discussion on the popular demand for an election time non-party neutral government and has made a proposal convenient only to herself.”

The opposition leader, however, said there was still scope for discussion. “The sooner they [discussions] are held, the better.”

In response to her call, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the same day said she was ready to communicate with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to bring the opposition party to negotiation table, if necessary, to reach a consensus on polls-time government.

The ruling Awami League considers Khaleda’s proposal on such administration unacceptable and backward and said it would not accept any unconstitutional proposal.

The government would do its best to bring the opposition party to the forthcoming parliamentary polls, Hasina told her cabinet colleagues after a meeting.
