Police swoop in on Khaleda’s convoy, detain Tuku

Update : 21 Oct 2013, 06:14 PM

In the presence of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, police detained former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, after the law enforcement agency officials and the BNP chairperson’s security force (CSF) engaged in a scuffle during her visit to the party headquarters at Nayapaltan on Monday night.

Khaleda met ailing BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at the party office, but on her way out the police forces deployed in the area constrained one of the vehicles in her convoy. The vehicle was carrying three members of the CSF and Salahuddin Tuku.

At one point, they got involved in an argument which escalated into a scuffle.

Members of the police then allegedly smashed the windows of the car to drag Tuku out. They also allegedly assaulted the CSF members, leaving them injured. Tuku was later detained.

BNP sources alleged that during the scuffle the police had torn off the clothes of two of the CSF members.

The incident left Khaleda Zia, BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with the convoy stranded for half an hour.

Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police Mehedee Hassan claimed: “One of the cars in the opposition party leader’s convoy tried to run over some members of the police. At that time, one of the passengers of the car was detained.”

When asked why the driver was not detained, he said the driver had escaped.

However, the driver was seen driving away with the car, contrary to the police’s claim.
