Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami ameer and leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman has said the party believes in a peaceful and harmonious relationship between employers and workers, rather than conflict.

He made the remarks on Friday afternoon while speaking as the chief guest at a workers’ rally organized by the Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in the capital.

Shafiqur Rahman said: “Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami believes in a just and peaceful relationship between employers and workers. We want a system where workers are paid before their sweat dries, and where employers and workers work shoulder to shoulder to keep the economy running.”

Criticizing what he described as the performance of Bangladeshi missions abroad, he said there was no justification for keeping embassies open that fail to protect the minimum interests and security of migrant workers.

“There is no justification for keeping embassies open that fail to protect the minimum interests and security of our migrant workers. If necessary, such embassies should be shut down,” he said.

Referring to Jamaat-e-Islami’s role in Parliament, Shafiqur said the party did not seek to act as “teachers or students of history,” but aimed to represent the rights of the people and the oppressed.

Leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami’s central and city units, along with officials of the Bangladesh Sramik Kalyan Federation, attended the rally.
