Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday described the 13th National Parliamentary Election as a “landmark victory” for liberal democracy, calling it a “positive turning point” in Bangladesh’s history.

Speaking at a press briefing at the InterContinental Hotel in the capital, organized to celebrate the party’s absolute majority, Fakhrul said the outcome marked the beginning of a new era for the country.

Referring to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who was present at the event, Fakhrul described him as the country’s new prime minister.

Highlighting what he termed years of repression, Fakhrul alleged that over the past 17 years, six lakh false cases had been filed against BNP leaders and activists and that 20,000 party members had been killed.

He also claimed that in 2024, approximately 2,000 students and citizens lost their lives.

“The recent election demonstrates the unity of the people under BNP leadership,” he said. “Those seeking change have expressed their verdict through the ballot. This election is a victory for liberal democracy.”

Fakhrul urged the party to strengthen its leadership to ensure a peaceful and democratic Bangladesh in the years ahead.
