Shafiqur Rahman: Jamaat will accept poll results, serve as ‘principled’ opposition

Ameer cites commitment to democracy after party wins 77 seats in 13th Parliamentary Election

Update : 14 Feb 2026, 11:45 AM

Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has announced that the party will accept the results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and serve as a responsible opposition party.

He said that the party has always been committed to a stable and effective democratic system and remains steadfast in that position.

In a post shared from his verified Facebook account at 1:44am on Saturday, he said: “We accept the overall results and respect the rule of law.”

He thanked the many volunteers and supporters for their tireless efforts, noting that some faced intimidation while exercising their democratic rights, and said their courage has strengthened democracy.

He told party leaders and activists that although some may feel disappointed, their efforts were not in vain, as winning 77 seats has nearly quadrupled the party’s presence in parliament, making it a strong opposition force. “This is not a setback, but a foundation,” he said.

Highlighting that political fortunes can change, he noted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party fell to 30 seats in 2008 but later formed the government after 18 years, adding that democratic politics is a long journey focused on earning trust, ensuring accountability, and preparing responsibly for the future.

He further noted that the true test of leadership lies not only in election campaigning but also in how one accepts the people’s verdict.

In his post, he concluded that their movement is not about a single election but about strengthening democracy, protecting citizens’ rights, and building an accountable state, adding that Jamaat will serve as a principled and peaceful opposition committed to national progress.
